AFA has been supportive of Personhood efforts in Colorado, Michigan, and other states. We are very grateful for their help and trust that God will use this to aid us in getting the 100,000 signatures we need as well as winning at the ballot box !

Lt. Governor signs Personhood Petition.

Support from grassroots pro-life Mississippians & leaders is growing. Among petition signers & supporters is Lt Governor Phil Bryant . He told us he wants to see this voted on and wants to help all he can  :

2000 signatures in two days ! 4000 signatures from four young people

Last weekend, petitioners collected over 2000 signatures at 4th of July events in Tupelo, Jackson, & Hernando !
In doing this one young man from the North Delta has -- with his sisters & a couple of helpers -- told me they has surpassed 4000 signatures. These people are part of a growing army of volunteers who are changing our state for the glory of God by putting feet on their pro-life convictions.

How One Church got 456 signatures !

Unlike supporting political candidates (which is a no-no according to the IRS) churches who want to stand for life can openly support the Personhood effort and even collect signatures at church. (See the Liberty Counsel memo for a review of what churches can do.

I have a friend who says that "All the signatures we need are sitting in pews on Sundays & Wednesdays in Mississippi."

I hope he's right (we have less than 80 days left).

Below is an example of how churches can get involved. If you want to do something like this at your church, please contact us ASAP .

Petition Drive Information
Harrisburg Baptist Church
Tupelo, Mississippi

My name is Gary Waters, and I am a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo.  We collected 456 signatures on one Sunday !  Here's the order of what we did.  I first sent my pastor a packet of information I printed from http://personhoodmississippi.com and asked if he would review it and allow me to set up a table or two on whatever Sunday he thought was appropriate, in order to collect signatures to put the Personhood Amendment on the 2010 state election ballot.  After he verified the authenticity of the Personhood Amendment effort, my pastor set up a meeting with me.  He enthusiastically approved the concept, designated an appropriate date for the operation, volunteered to include information about the petition in our church's weekly newsletter, placed information in the church bulletin, and notified the congregation about the petition drive at the end of each service on the day we collected signatures.

Actions in preparation for the petition drive:
1. Recruited a few dependable and mature Christian men to volunteer to help collect signatures
2. Coordinated the printing of several blank petition sheets
3. Requested permission to set up two tables and easels near key travel route intersections in the church
4. Created two posters with simple instructions in large letters ("Sign Petition Here") that contrasted with the poster
5. Printed local county names at the tops of different colored sheets (to place underneath clipboards for various counties)
6. Assembled clipboards and pens
7. Provided the volunteers with instructions
8. Arrived early enough to ensure items were in order for the operation

Lessons learned:
1. Develop a very short summation of what the petition is for, for people who have questions.
2. Be sure to ask petition signers:  a) Are you registered to vote in Mississippi? and b) What county are you registered to vote in?
3. If you might have folks from different counties, control the number of petitions you have out so that you can ensure folks sign the one for their county.
4. If you have people from different counties, create separate petitions and be vigilant to keep them separate (write the county names of each at the top corner of the petitions).
5. Nobody knows what precinct they vote in, including me.
6. When you briefly explain what the petition is about, it is very encouraging to see people nod in agreement as they reach for a pen.

Protecting weak and helpless people is a noble task.  Because of one wicked law, none are more vulnerable than children in the womb of a mother who is considering abortion.  I encourage fellow Christians to determine in their heart if they want to take an active part in protecting Mississippians who are not yet born, then read the information at http://personhoodmississippi.com and get involved.  May this generation rise up and be used to return Mississippi -- and hopefully America -- to a land where God's gift of life is once more protected, asking God to grant us victory for His glory and honor.

Divine Appointments

If you are a Christian who loves Jesus & loves people; who wants to reach out to people who would never visit your church, or crisis pregnancy center or listen to Christian radio, getting involved in petitioning for the Personhood Amendment will give you opportunities.

Every time people go out petitioning, we hear stories back of opportunities God provides for them to do more than just gather signatures. You meet post abortive parents; people considering abortion; people who don't know the Lord who need to hear of the loveliness of Christ; people who would like to get involved in caring for foster kids or adopting who don't know how.

One week, in two days we met a lady who knew of three young kids in foster care who needed a home and were able to introduce them to families who were willing to help -- then were given the opportunity to witness/ offer help to three different hurting young people in a two hour period while petitioning.

Perhaps one story will illustrate this :

Several weeks ago, Cal Zastrow, Caleb Gilbert, & some of the Riley Kids were petitioning at Ole Miss.

Cal approached a well dressed man in his late 20’s / early 30’s . Cal asked him, if he wanted to sign a pro-life petition.

The man told Cal : “It’s interesting that you should ask me this today. My wife and I have always considered ourselves pro-life, but we have an abortion scheduled for Saturday.

Cal, no longer merely a pro-life petitioner, but an Ambassador of Christ with an opportunity to minister to a need, spent some time talking with him & asking him what the problem was.

The man told Cal that the baby had a severe brain stem defect & almost certainly would not survive long after the birth. Cal was able to minister to him, to talk with him about the sovereignty of God; the love of Christ; the humanity of his unborn child; the pain that he & his wife would suffer if they went through with the abortion as opposed to the blessing of trusting God and protecting his wife & child until the child’s natural death.

We prayed for him that night. I wish I could report that we know that these troubled young parents changed their minds, but we do not.

What we do know is that Cal would have never gotten this Gospel opportunity; this. “Divine Appointment” had he not been out petitioning or been involved in another way (like through sidewalk counseling minstry or working at a CPC).

Another thing that we know is that while the Personhood effort in Colorado did not win at the ballot box, the process has had an amazing eternal impact on the state. Consider, that the Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the state had their clients, volunteers, and donations go up dramatically during/ after the petition process & election. And at the same time, Planned Parenthood has seen the number of abortions drop dramatically (reportedly to less than half) during the same people. And check out the amazing work God is doing there through the church with kids in foster care .

If you, your family, or your church have a desire to be used by God to minister to those in need and to speak the peace & truth of the Gospel to desperate souls, one way to find opportunities ( and “Divine Appointments”) could be to get actively involved in helping Personhood Mississippi’s Petitioning Efforts.
